With a focus on the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27), which was held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, Senator Galvez shared impressions concerning the Conference’s outcomes. Senate President Williams had also attended COP 27, and shared reflections about the conference.

The session featured presentations by Mr. Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the IPU; Ms. Anita Bhatia, UN Women; Ms. Hilary Gbedemah, Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women Committee; and Ms. Carmen Alanis, Former Chief Justice of Mexico.

Committee members also considered an interim report on teaching during a crisis, received an update on the implementation of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, and shared how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the sphere of culture.

Ms. Maille highlighted ongoing reform efforts at the Council of Europe, as well as its changing relationship with the EU, including the EU’s possible accession to the European Convention on Human Rights. The delegation in turn stressed the importance of the Canadian Embassy maintaining its presence at the Council of Europe.

Tourism must also be developed. The delegation expressed its appreciation that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago had ratified The Ottawa Treaty, otherwise known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction and that no troops were sent to Afghanistan.
