Canada is, however, satisfied that there is an international process in place for dealing with these issues, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. As stated in the Ilulissat Declaration, Canada “remains committed to this legal framework and to the orderly settlement of any possible overlapping claims.”

On the latter point, Senator Hervieux‑Payette called on all delegates to support a recommendation that FIPA member countries ratify the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
