From September 24 to 28, 2007, at the invitation of the Honourable Noël A. Kinsella, Speaker of the Senate, the Right Honourable the Baroness Hayman, Lord Speaker of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, visited Ottawa, Victoria and Vancouver.

His Excellency Howard Drake OBE, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Canada, also accompanied the Lord Speaker during the visit.

Led by Lord Purvis of Tweed, the cross-party delegation also included Mr. Andrew Percy, MP, Mr. Stephen Doughty, MP, and Ms. Anum Qaisar, MP.

Speaker D’Souza hosted a lunch for the delegation in the former residence of the Lord Chancellor. The informal conversation covered a number of topics including security and parliamentary privilege.

The Lord Speaker also attended the official installation ceremony of the 29th Governor General of Canada, Ms. Julie Payette. He had several site visits focusing on the renovation and modernisation of the parliamentary precinct.

The Minister of State for Trade and Investment, The Lord Livingston of Parkhead, affirmed that the United Kingdom is a firm proponent of free trade and stated that the CETA would present a real opportunity for UK exports.
