The 8th Plenary Assembly of ParlAmericas was held in Asunción from September 8 to 10, 2011, under the auspices of the Parliament of Paraguay. This year had a dual signification for Paraguay, as it marked the bicentenary anniversary of that country’s independence.

In April the Norwegian parliament hosted a Barents Parliamentary Conference where the need of a comprehensive Barents Transport Plan was highlighted. The Finnish representative also reported about the visit from the Norwegian parliament in April and informed about an upcoming visit to Murmansk and Kirkenes by 30 Finnish MPs in September.

The Chair concluded that the Steering Committee would recommend that the 12+ Group should support the new wording and ask the Executive Committee to work to find a mechanism by which Palestinian participation could be facilitated, recognising that the PLC was the legitimate parliament. This was agreed.

The Canadian delegation was led by Member of Parliament Marie-France Lalonde, Chair of the Canadian branch of the Association, and consisted of Senator René Cormier, Association’s Vice-Chair, as well as Members of Parliament Lena Metlege Diab, Fayçal El-Khoury, Laila Goodridge, Denis Trudel and Dominique Vien.

His presentation drew parallels between the Parliament of Canada and the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament. Senator Woo touched on Private Members Bills, Question Period, and the selection of the Speaker.
