The Regional Council is the decision-making body for the Canadian region. The Canadian Branch was represented by the Honourable Yuen Pau Woo, Senator and Mr. Terry Duguid, M.P. Canada as a whole makes up one of the regions of the CPA, and its 14 branches correspond to the provincial and territorial legislative assemblies and the federal Parliament.

This session provided an overview of the various tools parliamentarians can use to draw the attention of their respective chambers to issues of importance to them and to their constituents. The Honourable Marilou McPhedran, Senator, participated in discussions during the session on the legislative process. Her remarks focussed on the Senate of Canada’s role within the Parliament of Canada’s legislative process and touched on various themes including oversight, Senate Public Bills and committee work.

With Senator Dennis Dawson, rapporteur of the Canadian Branch, in attendance, the committee addressed a number of topics. Rapporteurs from the APF’s various committees and networks discussed study subjects and asked member branches to participate, notably through the completion of surveys on their practices in those areas.

The French delegation was led by National Assembly Member Christopher Weissberg, Chair of the French Branch of the Association, and Senator Yan Chantrel, Chair of the France–Canada Friendship Group in the Senate.

On April 7, 2021, the Hon. Salma Ataullahjan, Senator, the Hon. Kim Pate, Senator, Ms. Iqra Khalid, MP, and Ms. Yasmin Ratansi, MP, attended a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on women’s economic empowerment during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Honourable Salma Ataullahjan, Senator, Vice-president of the Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIPU) and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee on Middle East Questions (MEQ), called an extraordinary meeting of this committee to discuss recent developments in Palestine and in Libya.

Parliamentary Associations Associations promote the country’s interests abroad on a continuing basis and are composed of both members of the Senate and of the House of Commons.

She started by defining GBA+ and its importance within the context of policy making. Senator McPhedran then presented various opportunities for parliamentarians to advance GBA+ and gender-sensitive initiatives, including its application to legislation, budgeting, committee work and to the parliamentary environment more generally.
