Visit of the Honourable Andrew Scheer, M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, and a Parliamentary Delegation, Japan
From May 13 to 18, 2013, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, M.P., led a parliamentary delegation on a visit to Japan. The delegation was composed of Mr. Tom Lukiwski, Philip Toone and Rodger Cuzner, M.P.s. Accompanying the delegation were Mrs. Jill Scheer, Mrs. Kenzie Potter, Chief of Staff to the Speaker, and Mr. Michel Marcotte, Secretary to the delegation.
In Kyoto, the delegation met with:
- The Honourable Keiji YAMADA, Governor of Kyoto; and
- Mr. Hiroyuki FUJITA, Deputy Mayor of Kyoto.
In Tokyo, Mr. and Mrs. Scheer were received, in a private audience, by the Emperor and Empress of Japan. The delegation met with:
- The Honourable Shinzo ABE, Prime Minister of Japan;
- The Honourable Bunmei IBUKI, Speaker of the House of Representatives;
- The Honourable Kenji HIRATA, Speaker of the House of Councillors;
- The Honourable Sadakazu TANIGAKI, Minister of Justice and President of the Japan-Canada Diet Friendship League;
- The Honourable Fumio KISHIDA, Minister for Foreign Affairs; and
- The Honourable Akira AMARI, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization.
The purpose of the visit was to renew and strengthen relations between Canada and Japan by promoting the establishment of ongoing parliamentary dialogue and future parliamentary exchanges. It provided opportunities for discussion on foreign policy involving issues of international and mutual interest, and on subjects of common interest arising from our membership in various multilateral organizations.
In addition to these meetings, the delegation was invited to attend a sitting of the Japanese House of Representatives. While there, the delegates took a guided tour of the Parliament Building.
In Kyoto, the delegation visited the headquarters of two companies: Omron and Shimadzu Corporations.
