Official Visit of the Honourable Peter Milliken, M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, and a Parliamentary Delegation, to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
From January 10 to 13, 2005, the Speaker of the House of Commons led a parliamentary delegation composed of the Honourable Jean Augustine, P.C., M.P., Mr. Gurmant Grewal, M.P., Mr. Sébastien Gagnon, M.P., and Mr. Wajid Khan, M.P., to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This visit was a result of an official invitation from the Speaker of National Assembly of Pakistan, Mr. Chaudhry Amir Hussain.
During the visit, the delegates met with the following officials:- General Pervez Musharraf, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan;
- Mr. Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister;
- Mr. Chaudhry Amir Hussain Speaker of the National Assembly;
- Mr. Mianmohammed Soomro, Chairman of the Senate;
- Mr. Kasuri, Foreign Minister; and
- Mr. Hamid Nasir Chatta, Chairman of the Kashmir Committee.
The delegates also met with media representatives, cultural and religious groups.
This visit allowed delegates to renew parliamentary ties and explore issues common to both Commonwealth countries. Particular emphasis was placed on discussions surrounding parliamentary democracy and good governance.
