UIPU Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

The Honourable David McGuinty, P.C.,M.P., president of the Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIPU) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Executive Committee Vice-President for the Twelve Plus geopolitical group (12+), participated in a virtual Steering Committee meeting of the 12+ on June 9, 2020. Members discussed important matters that will be on the agenda of the upcoming virtual meeting of the International Executive Committee of the IPU. The 12+ Group is a collective of 47 IPU member states that caucus together to discuss key issues that will be presented to the Governing Council of the IPU, the union’s main administrative and policy-making body.

UIPU Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

The Statutes and Rules of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) permits members to form geopolitical groups. These groups play an important role in the functioning and activities of the IPU. Canada belongs to the Twelve Plus Group and Canadian parliamentarians occasionally participate in meetings of its Steering Committee of representatives from approximately seven to nine member-countries.

During the 63rd Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, whose priority theme was "Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls", the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women have organized a parliamentary meeting entitled "Investing in gender equality: Parliaments ensuring social protection, public services and infrastructure deliver for women and girls".
