An Act to amend the Statistics Act (National Office for Fire and Emergency Response Statistics)
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
SHORT TITLE
Short title
1. This Act may be cited as the National Office for Fire and Emergency Response Statistics Act.

2. The Statistics Act is amended by adding the following after section 29:
NATIONAL OFFICE FOR FIRE AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATISTICS
National Office for Fire and Emergency Response Statistics
29.1 (1) There is hereby established an office, within Statistics Canada, to be known as the National Office for Fire and Emergency Response Statistics.
Employees
(2) The Office shall be staffed by employees of Statistics Canada and shall operate under the direction of the Chief Statistician.
Duties of Office
(3) The Office shall collect and analyze fire and emergency response statistical information as directed by the Chief Statistician, including, but not limited to
(a) the total number of fires in Canada in each calendar year and the monetary losses and firefighter and civilian deaths and injuries resulting from those fires;
(b) the fire death rates in each calendar year for each province;
(c) the number of fires that were intentionally set in each calendar year and the monetary losses and firefighter and civilian deaths and injuries resulting from those fires;
(d) the number of forest fires in each calendar year and number of hectares affected by those forest fires; and
(e) the number of fire departments, the number of fire and emergency responses per department in each calendar year and the subject matters of response calls.
Report to Minister
(4) Within three months after the end of each calendar year, the Office shall submit a report to the Minister in respect of the statistical information collected and analyzed under subsection (3) in respect of that calendar year.
Tabling in Parliament
(5) The Minister shall cause the report to be laid before each House of Parliament on any of the first 15 days on which that House is sitting after the Minister receives it.
Data and methodology
(6) The Office shall, to the extent possible, set out the source of the data and information used in the preparation of the report and the methodology employed to arrive at the report’s findings, conclusions or recommendations.
Regulations
(7) The Governor in Council may make regulations for carrying out the purposes and provisions of this section.
