SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Federal Sustainable Development Act to provide for an examination of bills and proposed regulations to ensure that their provisions are not inconsistent with the purposes and provisions of that Act.

An Act to amend the Federal Sustainable Development Act (duty to examine)

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. The Federal Sustainable Development Act is amended by adding the following after section 12:
DUTY TO EXAMINE
Duty to examine
12.1 (1) Subject to subsection (3), the Minister of Justice shall, in accordance with such regulations as may be made by the Governor in Council, examine every regulation transmitted to the Clerk of the Privy Council for registration pursuant to the Statutory Instruments Act and every Bill introduced in or presented to the House of Commons by a Minister of the Crown, in order to ensure that none of their provisions are inconsistent with the purposes and provisions of this Act.
Duty to report
(2) The Minister of Justice shall report any inconsistency to the House of Commons at the earliest possible opportunity.
Exception
(3) A proposed regulation need not be examined in accordance with subsection (1) if prior to being made it was examined in accordance with section 3 of the Statutory Instruments Act and its consistency with the purposes and provisions of this Act was thus ensured.
