SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Statistics Act to require the Governor in Council to consult with the leader of every recognized party in the House of Commons before appointing the Chief Statistician of Canada and to make that appointment from a list of candidates submitted by a search committee appointed by the Minister designated by the Governor in Council for the purposes of that Act. It also requires the Chief Statistician of Canada to establish and publish guidelines respecting sources of statistical information and its collection, analysis, processing, storage and publication.

Le texte modifie la Loi sur la statistique afin d’exiger du gouverneur en conseil qu’il consulte le chef de chacun des partis reconnus à la Chambre des communes avant de nommer le statisticien en chef du Canada qu’il choisit à partir de la liste de candidats établie par un comité des candidatures constitué par le ministre chargé de l'application de la loi. En outre, il oblige le statisticien en chef du Canada à établir et à publier des lignes directrices concernant les sources des renseignements statistiques ainsi que la collecte de ceux-ci, leur analyse, leur traitement, leur entreposage et leur publication.
