SUMMARY

The purpose of this enactment is to recognize and apologize for the treatment that persons of Italian origin received in Canada during the Second World War in spite of the contribution that they have made and continue to make to the building of Canada.

The enactment also provides for restitution to be made in respect of this treatment. The restitution payment is to be applied to the development and production of educational materials relating to Italian-Canadian history and promoting ethnic and racial harmony, and to other projects agreed to by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and an educational foundation established for this purpose.

SOMMAIRE

Le texte a pour objet de reconnaître le traitement injuste subi, au Canada, par les personnes d’origine italienne durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, bien qu’elles aient contribué au développement du Canada et qu’elles continuent à le faire, et de présenter des excuses à cet égard.

Le texte prévoit aussi une indemnisation pour compenser l’injustice subie. Elle servira à l’élaboration et à la production de matériel éducatif portant sur l’histoire des Canadiens d’origine italienne et promouvant l’harmonie ethnique et raciale, ainsi qu’à d’autres projets agréés par le ministre du Patrimoine canadien en collaboration avec une fondation éducative établie à cette fin.
