An Act respecting a Canada-Portugal Day
Whereas every year on June 10, in Canada and throughout the world, persons of Portuguese origin remember their cultural roots by celebrating the life of Luis de Camões, the author of Os Lusiadas, the epic poem about the history of Portugal prior to 1500;
Whereas the Government of Canada wishes to recognize and express gratitude for the contribution of the Portuguese-Canadian community to Canadian society over the years;
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
SHORT TITLE
Short title
1. This Act may be cited as the Canada-Portugal Day Act.
CANADA-PORTUGAL DAY
Canada-Portugal Day
2. Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the 10th day of June shall be known as “Canada-Portugal Day” in recognition of the history of the Portuguese-Canadian community and its contribution to Canadian society.
Not a legal holiday
3. For greater certainty, Canada-Portugal Day is not a legal holiday or a non-juridical day.
