Bill C-27

SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Criminal Code to create a new offence of identity theft, of trafficking in identity information and of unlawful possession or trafficking in certain government-issued identity documents, to clarify and expand certain offences related to identity theft and identity fraud, to exempt certain persons from liability for certain forgery offences, and to allow for an order that the offender make restitution to a victim of identity theft or identity fraud for the expenses associated with rehabilitating their identity.

Le texte modifie le Code criminel afin de créer de nouvelles infractions pour le vol d’identité, le trafic de renseignements identificateurs et la possession illégale ou le trafic de certaines pièces d’identité délivrées par le gouvernement et apporte des précisions et des ajouts à certaines infractions existantes liées au vol d’identité et à la fraude à l’identité. Il prévoit une exemption à certaines infractions relatives aux faux documents. Il prévoit enfin le dédommagement des victimes de vol d’identité ou de fraude à l’identité qui ont engagé des dépenses pour rétablir leur identité.
