Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament

Thursday, March 1, 2007

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

We are ready. I wish to thank you for being here. It is much appreciated. It is surprising to see so many honourable members and honourable senators.

I'm pleased to see everyone here. We have tried several times. We really almost made it one day, but they didn't clear out the room in time for us.
We have one purpose, but this will be an important step en route to perhaps having a little more activity with our committee and a little more meaningful role.
I would ask Bonnie from the House of Commons to please undertake the process of electing a co-chair from the House of Commons.
My name is Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, and I have the honour of being the co-chair from the Senate.
Honourable Senators and members of the House of Commons, I see a quorum. We can now proceed to the election of the co-chair.
I'm ready to receive motions to that effect.
I move that Mr. Goldring be nominated for joint chair.
    Are there any other nominations?
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
I declare the motion carried, and Mr. Goldring duly elected co-chair of the committee. Before inviting you to take the chair, I will need to proceed to the election of a vice-chair.
I am now prepared to receive motions for vice-chair. Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the first vice-chair must be a member of the official opposition.
Are there any motions for a vice-chair?
I would like to nominate my colleague Gurbax Malhi.
    Are there any other motions?
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
I declare the motion carried and Mr. Malhi duly elected vice-chair of the committee.
I would now invite Mr. Goldring to take the chair.
It was a long and gruelling campaign, ladies and gentlemen.
It's a pleasure to be working again with you, Senator.
As the senator just mentioned, we certainly are looking for input as to what can be accomplished. My colleague Mr. Calkins has come up with some ideas. Perhaps we could have some feedback on what you feel the library could do better, or could do for the betterment of the House of Commons.
I thank you very much for this appointment. I think we're calling for an adjournment now, are we?

    I call for an adjournment.
    It's a very erudite committee.
We represent a very important institution, however; never forget that.
I mean that with sincerity. I don't know why they're chuckling.
