An Act to amend the Holidays Act (Sir John A. Macdonald Day) and to make consequential amendments to other Acts

R.S., c. H-5

      Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

1. The Holidays Act is amended by adding the following after section 3:

SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD DAY

Sir John A. Macdonald Day

3.1 January 11 is a national holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of ``Sir John A. Macdonald Day''.

CONSEQUENTIAL AMENDMENTS

Interpretation Act

R.S., c. I-21

2. The portion before paragraph (a) of the definition ``holiday'' in section 35 of the Interpretation Act is replaced by the following:

``holiday''
« jour férié »

``holiday'' means any of the following days, namely, Sunday; New Year's Day; Sir John A. Macdonald Day ; Good Friday; Easter Monday; Christmas Day; the birthday or the day fixed by proclamation for the celebration of the birthday of the reigning Sovereign; Victoria Day; Canada Day; the first Monday in September, designated Labour Day; Remembrance Day; any day appointed by proclamation to be observed as a day of general prayer or mourning or day of public rejoicing or thanksgiving; and any of the following additional days, namely,

3. Subparagraph 42(a)(i) of the Bills of Exchange Act is replaced by the following:

      (i) Sundays, New Year's Day, Sir John A. Macdonald Day , Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day,
