The Special Joint Committee to amend Section 93 of the Constitution Act, 1867 concerning the Quebec school system met at 3:30 p.m., in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Honourable Lucie Pépin and Denis Paradis (Joint Chairs) presiding.
Representing the Senate: The Honourable Senators Gérald A. Beaudoin, Jerahmiel Grafstein, Thérèse Lavoie-Roux, Lucie Pépin and Fernand Robichaud.
Representing the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Paul DeVillers, Nick Discepola, Sheila Finestone, Yvon Godin, Peter Goldring, Marlene Jennings, Jason Kenney (for Rahim Jaffer), Réal Ménard, Val Meredith and Denis Paradis.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 9, 1997 and by the House of Commons on October 1, 1997, the Committee examined various aspects of the draft resolution concerning the proposed amendment to Section 93 of the Constitution Act, 1867 concerning the Quebec school system.
The witnesses from Real Women of Canada made a statement and answered questions.
The witnesses from l’Association pour l’éducation interculturelle du Québec made a statement and answered questions.
Ms. De Courcy made a statement and, with the assistance of the other witnesses from the Mouvement pour une école moderne et ouverte, answered questions.
At 5:50 p.m., the meeting was suspended.
At 6:35 p.m., the meeting was resumed.
The witnesses who appeared as individuals made statements and answered questions.
Mr. Daniels made a statement and, with the other witnesses of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, answered questions.
At 8:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Joint Chairs.
