Monday, May 25, 1998

The Special Joint Committee on Child Custody and Access met at 9:11 o’clock p.m., this day, in Salon AB, Airport Plaza Hotel, St. John's, Newfoundland, the Joint Chairs, the Honourable Landon Pearson and Roger Gallaway presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Honourable Senators Erminie Cohen, Joan Cook, Derek Lewis and Landon Pearson.

From the House of Commons: Carolyn Bennett, Sheila Finestone, Roger Gallaway, Eric Lowther and Diane St-Jacques.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Research Coordinator.

Witnesses: From Unified Family Court of St. John's: Emily Friel, Court Administrator; Cathy Foster, Court Counsellor; Berkley Reynold, Previous Court Administrator Child Support Guidelines; Sandra Hefford, Court Counsellor; Nancy Paul, Court Counsellor. From the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women: Joyce Hancock, President; Joyce Aylworth, Member. From the Provincial Association Against Family Violence: Helen Murphy, Coordinator; Elaine Wychreschuk, Member; Kirsten Schmidt, Member. Pursuant to its Orders of Reference from the Senate dated October 28, 1997 and from the House of Commons dated November 18, 1997 the Committee resumed its study relating to child custody and access.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:40 o'clock a.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 1:16 o'clock p.m. the sitting resumed.

At 2:57 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
