An Act respecting National Heritage Day

      Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

R.S., c. H-5

1. The Holidays Act is amended by adding the following after section 4:

NATIONAL HERITAGE DAY

National Heritage Day

5. The third Monday of February is a legal holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of ``National Heritage Day''.

CONSEQUENTIAL AMENDMENTS

Interpretation Act

R.S., c. I-21

2. The portion of the definition ``holiday'' of section 35 of the Interpretation Act before paragraph (a) is replaced by the following:

``holiday''
« jour férié »

``holiday'' means any of the following days, namely, Sunday; New Year's Day; National Heritage Day; Good Friday; Easter Monday; Christmas Day; the birthday or the day fixed by proclamation for the celebra tion of the birthday of the reigning Sover eign; Victoria Day; Canada Day; the first Monday in September, designated Labour Day; Remembrance Day; any day ap pointed by proclamation to be observed as a day of general prayer or mourning or day of public rejoicing or thanksgiving; and any of the following additional days, namely,

3. Subparagraph 42(a)(i) of the Bills of Exchange Act is replaced by the following:

      (i) Sundays, New Year's Day, National Heritage Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Remem brance Day and Christmas Day,

4. The definition ``general holiday'' in section 166 of the Canada Labour Code is replaced by the following:

``general holiday''

``general holiday'' means New Year's Day, National Heritage Day, Good Friday, Victo ria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanks giving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day and includes any day substituted for any such holiday pursuant to section 195;

COMING INTO FORCE

Coming into force

5. This Act comes into force on a day to be fixed by order of the Governor in Council.
