Visit of the Honourable Peter Milliken, M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, and a Parliamentary Delegation, Trinidad and Tobago
From April 2 to 5, 2007, the Speaker of the House of Commons led a parliamentary delegation composed of Mr. Michel Guimond, M.P., Mr. Paul Szabo, M.P. and Mr. Barry Devolin, M.P. on an official visit to Trinidad and Tobago.
The delegation met with:
- His Excellency George Maxwell Richards, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago;
- The Honourable Patrick Manning, M.P., Prime Minister;
- The Honourable Barendra Sinanan, M.P., Speaker of the House of Representatives;
- The Honourable Dr. Linda Baboolal, Senator, President of the Senate;
- The Honourable Wade Mark, Senator, Leader of the Opposition Bench in the Senate;
- Senator Dr. Roodal Moonilal;
- Senator Tim Gopeesingh;
- Mrs. Anne Mitchell-Gift, Presiding Officer, Tobago House of Assembly;
- The Honourable Orville London, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly;
- Captain Rawle Baddaloo, Acting Director, Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Ltd.; and
- Representatives of Canadian companies with branches in Trinidad and Tobago.
The visit sought to underscore the importance of relations between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago and to further reinforce the strong interparliamentary communication between our countries. The delegation gained first-hand knowledge of the economic and political challenges currently facing Trinidad and Tobago and had the opportunity to learn more about the distinctive culture of the island of Tobago.
Canada and Trinidad and Tobago are both members of the Commonwealth and the Organization of American States (OAS) and participate actively in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and in the Inter-Parliamentary Forum of the Americas (FIPA).
