Visit of the Honourable Peter Milliken, M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, and a Parliamentary Delegation, Malaysia
From November 3 to 9, 2007, the Speaker of the House of Commons led a parliamentary delegation composed of Mr. Rick Dykstra, M.P., Ms. Monique Guay, M.P., Ms. Nancy Karetak-Lindell, M.P., and Mr. Todd Russell, M.P.
In Malaysia, the delegation met with:
- His Excellency Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, Prime Minister of Malaysia;
- His Excellency Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Abdul Hamid Pawanteh, President of the Senate;
- His Excellency Tan Sri Dato' Seri DiRaja Ramli Ngah Talib, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia;
- His Excellency Senator Dato' Ir. Wong Foon Meng, Deputy President of the Senate;
- The Honourable Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri, Minister, Prime Minister's Office;
- His Excellency Yang DiPertua Negeri Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil bin Yaakob, State Governor of Malacca;
- Members of the Opposition;
- Malaysian Electoral Commission;
- Members of the Malaysia-Canada Business Council (MCBC);
- BERSIH Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections; and
- Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS).
The objectives of the visit were to:
- enhance relations between Canada and Malaysia;
- strengthen interparliamentary communication; and
- commemorate the 50th anniversary of Malaysian independence and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Malaysia.
