CSG-WEST is a non-partisan organization comprised of the legislatures of the 13 western U.S. states (see the Appendix); British Columbia and Alberta are associate members. It meets annually and – with one exception to date – it meets in the United States; in 2012, the annual meeting was held in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Statutes and Rules of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) permits members to form geopolitical groups. These groups play an important role in the functioning and activities of the IPU. Canada belongs to the Twelve Plus Group and Canadian parliamentarians occasionally participate in meetings of its Steering Committee of representatives from approximately seven to nine member-countries.
