The IPU supports the efforts of the United Nations, whose objectives it shares, and works in close cooperation with it. It also cooperates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals.

The Chair welcomed Members to the meeting and extended a particular welcome to Mr Daniel Reisiegel (Czech Republic) who was attending the Steering Committee for the first time as part of the rotating membership system between Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic. The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization serving the legislators and legislative staff of the 50 U.S. states as well as its commonwealths and territories. With its standing committees comprised of legislators and legislative staff, the NCSL provides research, technical assistance and a venue for the exchange of ideas on state issues.
