At the invitation of Mr. Lubomir Zaoralek, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies in the Parliament of the Czech Republic, and Mr. France Cukjati, Speaker of the National Assembly in the Republic of Slovenia, the Honourable Peter Milliken, M.P. and Speaker of the House of Commons, led a parliamentary delegation on an official visit to the Czech Republic and Slovenia from 19 to 23 September 2005.

The Chair, Senator Tardif explained that a review of the activities, and particularly the objectives and anticipated results, of the 13 parliamentary associations formally recognized and funded by the Canadian Parliament was under way in order to reduce costs.

On January 29, Their Excellencies Lauri Hussar, President of the Parliament of Estonia, Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Parliament of Latvia and Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Parliament of Lithuania led delegations at the invitation of the Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons.

Elections to the Scottish Parliament are conducted on the basis of combining the traditional first-past-the-post system (to elect 73 constituency members) and a form of proportional representation called the Additional Member System (to elect 56 regional members - seven for each of the eight regions used in European Parliament elections).

The theme for the Annual Session was “Strengthening Regional Security by Fostering Democratic and Inclusive Societies: The Role of the OSCE PA”. The Annual Session, hosted by the Parliament of Canada, was attended by over 300 Parliamentarians. Speaker Gagné and Mr. d’Entremont served as co-hosts.

The Canadian delegation was led by Member of Parliament Marie-France Lalonde, Chair of the Canadian branch of the Association, and consisted of Senator René Cormier, Association’s Vice-Chair, as well as Members of Parliament Lena Metlege Diab, Fayçal El-Khoury, Laila Goodridge, Denis Trudel and Dominique Vien.

Member of Parliament Marie-France Lalondeattended the meeting virtually for the Canadian Branch of the APF. She presented a new draft report theme on family patrimony and francophone women, a proposal that was approved by the Network.
