Canadian NATO Parliamentarians to Meet NAC, EU
and NATO Top Officials in Brussels
13 February 2009 – A Canadian delegation
including Ms. Cheryl Gallant, M.P., Ms. Lois Brown, M.P., Mr. John McKay, M.P.,
Mr. Claude Bachand, M.P., Senator Jane Cordy, Senator Joseph Day and Senator
Pierre Claude Nolin, will be in Brussels from 15-18 February to discuss the
Alliance’s current political and security agenda in high level meetings with
NATO and European Union civilian and military officials.
On Sunday, February 15, the delegation will be briefed,
among others, by Martin Erdmann, NATO Assistant Secretary General and Head of
Political Affairs and Security Policy; and Robert Simmons, NATO Secretary
General’s Special Representative for the Caucuses and Central Asia.
On Monday, February 16, the delegation will have a
private breakfast meeting with Ambassador Robert McCrae, Canada’s Permanent
Representative to NATO; followed by briefings by Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola,
Chairman of the NATO Military Committee; and Ambassador Jiri Sedivy, Assistant
Secretary General, NATO Defence Policy and Planning Division.
NATO Parliamentarians, including delegations from Canada
and the United States, will hold their annual joint meeting with the Permanent
Representatives to the North Atlantic Council (NAC) Monday afternoon at NATO
headquarters.
On Tuesday, February 17, NATO parliamentarians will be
briefed at the European Commission by the Hon. Joaquin Almunia, Economic and
Monetary Affairs Commissioner and by David O’Sullivan, European Commission’s
Director General for Trade.
