Canadian Parliamentarians Meet With Southern State Legislators

From 18–22 July 2015, Senator David Wells, Vice-Chair led a delegation from the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group to the 69th annual meeting of the Council of State Government’s Southern Legislative Conference (SLC). The other delegates were Senator Jane Cordy, Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette and Ms. Libby Davies, M.P. The meeting was held in Savannah, Georgia.

“I know I speak on behalf of the delegation in saying that we were very pleased to be able to attend this important conference,” said Senator Wells. “Among the 15 SLC states, 11 have Canada as their primary foreign export market, so it was great to be able to speak to state legislators about how Canada and their states are currently working together, and efforts that would enhance our bilateral relationship.”

Senator Wells concluded: “As well, many of the policy sessions were focused on areas where Canada and the United States are experiencing similar challenges, such as attracting new farmers, ensuring that people have the skills that employers need, and ensuring effective and efficient supply chains. Certainly, it is important that our countries continue to work together in finding solutions to these and other challenges.”

Founded in 1947, the Southern Legislative Conference includes state legislators from 15 southern states. Its mission is to foster and encourage intergovernmental cooperation among member states. Information about the SLC can be found at www.slcatlanta.org.
