CANADA-U.S. IPG ATTENDS SUMMER MEETING OF U.S. GOVERNORS

From 23–25 July 2015, Senator Wilfred Moore, Q.C., Vice-Chair led a delegation from the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group (IPG) to the 2015 summer meeting of the National Governors Association (NGA) in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The other delegate was Senator Scott Tannas.

“I was very pleased to lead a delegation to the NGA’s summer meeting,” said Senator Moore. “The sessions on tourism and economic development, and ensuring that people have the skills needed for the workplaces of today and tomorrow, were particularly interesting. The tourism sector is a major contributor to the economic success of a number of Canada’s communities, and – with the current low relative value of the Canadian dollar – Canada hopes to see an increased number of tourists from the United States. I think a range of countries – including Canada – understand the priority of ensuring that the areas in which people are being educated and trained will lead to gainful employment. Certainly, Canada and the United States can learn from each other in these and other areas.”

Senator Moore concluded: “Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper’s initiative for his year as NGA Chair – Delivering Results – is another area where I believe our two countries can share best practices for joint benefit. In times such as these, there is a need to deliver results for taxpayers, and to do so as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.”

Founded in 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt gathered state governors in order to discuss the nation’s resources, the NGA is the collective voice of U.S. governors from the 50 states, three territories and two commonwealths. It is also a public policy organization that represents the governors on Capitol Hill and before the U.S. Administration on federal issues that affect them, and that develops and implements solutions to public policy challenges. More information about the NGA can be found at: www.nga.org.

The Canada–United States IPG aims to find points of convergence in respective national policies, to initiate dialogue on points of divergence, to encourage the exchange of information, and to promote better understanding among legislators on shared issues of concern.
