Members of the Canadian Section of
the Canada-US Inter-Parliamentary Group Attend Ottawa Meeting of the Can/Am
Border Trade Alliance
From May 1-3, 2011,
members of the Canadian Section of the Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary
Group (IPG) attended the annual spring meeting of the Canadian/American Border
Trade Alliance (BTA) in Ottawa. Senator Marie-P. Poulin, Vice-Chair attended
the meeting, and Mr. Gord Brown, M.P., Co-Chair of the IPG was an invited
speaker.
“Twice each year, at the
annual spring and fall meetings of the BTA, I’m fortunate to be able to share
information about the IPG’s recent and future bilateral activities. Our
participation also enables us to gain insight about the challenges faced by
businesses and individuals as well as about efforts and actions by governments
in both countries to address these challenges”, said Mr. Brown. “I look forward
to speaking about the Group’s summer activities and our 52nd annual meeting at
the BTA’s fall meeting in October.”
Mr. Brown concluded: “I
was pleased that so many of the speakers at the BTA meeting mentioned the
perimeter security and economic competitiveness initiative announced by Prime
Minister Harper and President Obama on February 4th of this year. I think that
there are lots of opportunities within the framework provided by this
initiative for our two countries to work together in a way that will result in
enhanced security and prosperity for individuals and businesses in both
countries”.
The Can/Am Border Trade
Alliance (BTA) holds two meetings each year: in the spring in Ottawa and in the
fall in Washington, D.C. The BTA is a coalition of businesses, public-sector
organizations and individuals with an interest in bilateral trade and tourism.
Its mission is to maximize commercial activity and ensure continued growth in
cross-border trade as well as efficient and productive border-crossing
capabilities.
