The 7th Gathering of the ParlAmericas Open Parliament Network (OPN) aimed to analyze the impact of the digital transformation on democratic systems, considering not only the opportunities and challenges that have emerged in recent years due to the widespread use of the internet and ICTs, but also how initiatives for transparent and accountable digital governance can be implemented within the paradigm of open parliament.
The social impact of these transformations was also addressed, especially in relation to the empowerment of women within the framework of an inclusive digital governance that recognizes the critical importance of their meaningful participation in the digital ecosystem as an essential condition for more robust and solid democracies.

Luncheon in Honour of the Visit to Canada of the Right Honourable Alison Johnstone, MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament and Delegation

On 17 April 2023, James Maloney, M. P., Chair of the Canada–United Kingdom Inter-Parliamentary Association (RUUK), hosted a luncheon in honour of Alison Johnstone, the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, and two of her fellow members of the Scottish Parliament, Collette Stevenson and Finlay Carson. The Scottish delegation and members of the RUUK executive engaged in a dynamic discussion about a variety of topics of shared interest. Among other matters, they compared the two countries’ parliamentary procedures in view of ensuring their openness and modernity; discussed strategies to offset carbon emissions while recognizing the need for sound land management, agri-food and just transition policies; and shared their views on demographic and labour challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit.

The CPA’s international executive committee (EXCO) meets twice a year, in the spring and just before the annual meeting. The CPA’s constitution authorizes it to control and manage the activities and business of the association. The international executive committee has about 35 members and is led by the chairperson of the CPA. The committee is made up of the officers of the CPA and three representatives from each region (except Africa, which has six representatives given its size).
