The
Canada-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Group (CJIG) hosted the 17th
Bilateral Meeting from January 3 – 7, 2011 in Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler,
British Columbia. Led by the Co-Chairs, the Honourable Bryon Wilfert, P.C.,
M.P., and the Honourable David Tkachuk, the delegation was composed of the
following parliamentarians: Dennis Bevington, M.P., Tony Martin, M.P.,
Christian Ouellet, M.P., Mike Wallace, M.P., Terence Young, M.P., and
accompanied by the Executive Secretary, Elizabeth Kingston.
The
visit culminated in the signing of a joint declaration by parliamentarians
encouraging the governments of both Japan and Canada to undertake discussions
leading to an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the two countries.
The CJIG intends to encourage the Canadian Government to pursue such
discussions at the earliest opportunity.
