Visit to Canada of the Right Honourable Ken Macintosh, M.S.P.,
Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,
and a Parliamentary Delegation

On April 5-6, 2017, the Honourable George J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate, and the Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons received the Right Honourable Ken Macintosh, M.S.P., Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament of the United Kingdom Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The delegation was composed of Ms. Clare Adamson, M.S.P., Mr. Edward Mountain, M.S.P., and Ms. Joanne McNaughton, Principal Private Secretary to the Presiding Officer, and Mr. Fergus Cochrane, Head of the International Relations Office.

In Ottawa, the delegation held meetings with:

  • The Honourable George J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate;
  • The Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons;
  • Members of the Standing Committee of the Special Senate Committee on Senate Modernization;
  • Members of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs;
  • Members of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology of the House of Commons;
  • Members of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans of the House of Commons; and
  • Several Senators and MPs on the occasion of an official joint luncheon hosted by Speaker Furey and Speaker Regan and a luncheon hosted by the Canada-United Kingdom Inter-Parliamentary Association; and
  • Ms. Karen E. Shepherd, Commissioner of Lobbying.

The Presiding Officer also held several meetings with Officials of the House of Commons Administrations. The visit was an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations between the Parliaments of Scotland and Canada. Many topics were discussed during the meetings, such as parliamentary procedure and reforms, current challenges facing their respective parliament, parliamentary diplomacy as well as the ramifications of Brexit.
