Visit to Canada of His Excellency Milan Štĕch,
President of the Senate of the Czech Republic,
and a Parliamentary Delegation

From May 29 to June 4, 2016, His Excellency Milan Štĕch, President of the Senate of the Czech Republic, led a parliamentary delegation to Ottawa, Calgary and Toronto at the invitation of the Honourable George J. Furey, Speaker of the Senate.

The delegation was composed of Mr. Petr Vícha, Senator, Committee on Public Administration, Regional Development and the Environment and Chairman of the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD) Senate Club; Mr. Jaroslav Kubera, Senator, Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs and Chairman of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) Senate Club; Mr. Luděk Jeništa, Senator, Committee on EU Affairs; Mr. Radko Martínek, Senator, Committee on Public Administration, Regional Development and the Environment; Mrs. Alena Šromová, Senator, Committee on Health and Social Policy; Mr. Vladimír Bärtl, Vice-Minister, Ministry of Industry and Trade; Prof. Josef Lazar, Member of the Academic Council, Academy of Science of the Czech Republic; Mr. Jiří Krbec, Director, Foreign Office of the Senate;

In Ottawa, the delegation held meetings with:

  • The Honourable George J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate;
  • The Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons;
  • The Honourable Stéphane Dion, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs;
  • The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, P.C., M.P., Minister of International Trade;
  • The Honourable Peter Harder, P.C., Senator, Representative of the Government in the Senate;
  • Members of the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade;
  • Members of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology; and
  • Members of the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association.

In Calgary, the delegation met with:

  • The Honourable Dan Hays, former Speaker of the Senate;
  • Mr. Richard Pootmans, Deputy Mayor of the City of Calgary; and
  • Mr. Jeff Fielding, Manager, City of Calgary.

In Toronto, the delegation met with:

  • The Honourable Soo Wong, M.P.P., Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario; and
  • The Honourable Glen R. Murray, M.P.P., Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

The members of the parliamentary delegation were accompanied by representatives of the Czech Republic business sector. As such, His Excellency Milan Štĕch launched business seminars in Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto and Niagara.

Both the parliamentary and the business delegation met with members of the Czech community in Calgary and in the Toronto region.

This visit was an opportunity for the delegation to foster bilateral relations between the Czech Parliament and the Parliament of Canada and to engage in discussions on a number of topics, including economic development and trade matters as regards the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, best practices related to immigration and integration programs, and cooperation within the NATO umbrella.
