Visit to Canada of the Right Honourable Tricia Marwick, M.S.P., Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

From April 11 to 12, 2016, the Right Honourable Tricia Marwick, M.S.P., Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, visited Ottawa at the invitation of the Honourable Georges J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate and the Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons. She was accompanied by Mr. William McLaren, Principal Private Secretary to the Presiding Officer, and Mr. Fergus D. Cochrane, Head of International Relations Office.

In Ottawa, the Presiding Officer held meetings with:

  • The Honourable Georges J. Furey, Q.C., Speaker of the Senate;
  • The Honourable Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons; and
  • The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, P.C., M.P., Minister of Science and Chair of the Canada-Scotland Friendship Group.

The Presiding Officer also held meetings with Officials of the House of Commons Administration.  The visit was an opportunity to foster bilateral relations between the Parliaments of Scotland and Canada.  Many topics were discussed during the meetings, including parliamentary procedure and reforms, the Members’ Orientation Program of the House of Commons, and the importance of promoting parliamentary democracy.
