SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Governor General’s Act to set the Governor General’s annual salary at $1. It also repeals Part II of the Act in order to remove the right to a retiring annuity and amends other acts in consequence.

An Act to amend the Governor General’s Act

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

R.‍S.‍, c. G-9

Governor General’s Act

1Subsection 4(1) of the Governor General’s Act is replaced by the following:

Salary

4(1)There shall be payable to the Governor General Insertion start an annual Insertion end salary of Insertion start $1 Insertion end beginning on Insertion start February 1, 2021 Insertion end .

2Section 4.‍1 of the Act is repealed.

3Part II of the Act is repealed.

Consequential amendments

R.‍S.‍, c. G-2

Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act

4The schedule to the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act is amended by striking out the reference to “1 Governor General’s Act.‍”.

1992, c. 46, Sch. II

Pension Benefits Division Act

5The definition pension plan in section 2 of the Pension Benefits Division Act is amended by striking out subparagraph (a)‍(viii).

R.‍S.‍, c. S-24

Supplementary Retirement Benefits Act

6Paragraph 8(2)‍(c) of the Supplementary Retirement Benefits Act is replaced by the following:

  • (c)any benefit calculated by reference to an annuity payable under the Judges Act,

7Schedule I to the Act is amended by striking out the reference to “1 Governor General’s Act.‍”.

Transitional provision

8Part II of the Governor General’s Act, as it read immediately before February 1, 2021, continues to apply with respect to an annuity referred to in section 6 or 7 that became payable before that date.

Coming into Force

February 1, 2021

9This Act is deemed to have come into force on February 1, 2021.
