SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Canada Elections Act regarding the contribution limits and the computation of the fund paid to registered political parties. It also makes a consequential amendment to the Income Tax Act as to the eligible amount of a monetary contribution made to a registered party, a registered association or a candidate.

An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act and to make a consequential amendment to another Act (political financing)

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Canada Elections Act

1Paragraphs 367(1)‍(a) to (d) of the Canada Elections Act are replaced by the following:

  • (a)$ Insertion start 500 Insertion end in total in any calendar year to a particular registered party;

  • (b)$ Insertion start 500 Insertion end in total in any calendar year to the registered associations, nomination contestants and candidates of a particular registered party;

  • (c)$ Insertion start 500 Insertion end in total Insertion start in any calendar year Insertion end to a candidate who is not the candidate of a registered party; and

  • (d)$ Insertion start 1000 Insertion end in total in any calendar year to the leadership contestants in a particular leadership contest.

2Subsection 445(2) of the Act is replaced by the following:

Computation of fund

(2)An allowance fund for a quarter is the product of

  • (a) Insertion start $0.‍375 Insertion end multiplied by the number of valid votes cast in the election referred to in subsection (1); and

  • (b) Insertion start the inflation adjustment factor determined under section 384 that is in effect for that Insertion end quarter.

Consequential Amendment to the Income Tax Act

3Subsection 127(3) of the Income Tax Act is amended by adding “and” at the end of paragraph (a) and by replacing paragraphs (b) and (c) by the following:

  • (b)when that total exceeds $400, $300 plus 50% of the amount by which that total exceeds $400,
