Meeting No. 6

Tuesday, April 24, 2001

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Co-Chairs, the Hon. Shirley Maheu and Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Hon. Lise Bacon, the Hon. Gérald A. Beaudoin, the Hon. Joan Fraser, the Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier, the Hon. Rose-Marie Losier-Cool, the Hon. Shirley Maheu, the Hon. Jean-Claude Rivest, the Hon. Jean-Maurice Simard.

From the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Eugène Bellemare, Gérard Binet, Sarmite Bulte, John Godfrey, Yvon Godin, Rahim Jaffer, Scott Reid, Yolande Thibeault.

Acting Member present: From the House of Commons: Louis Plamondon for Benoît Sauvageau.

In attendance: From the Senate: Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the House of Commons: Guyanne L. Desforges, Co-Clerk of the Committee and Jean-François Pagé, Legislative Clerk. From the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe and Robert Asselin, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Dyane Adam, Commissioner of Official Languages; Michel Robichaud, Director General, Investigations Branch; Marc Séguin, Director General, Corporate Services; Gilbert Langelier, Director, Special Investigations Division; Gérard Finn, Director General, Policy and Communications Branch.

In accordance with Standing Order 108 (4) (b), the review of the Annual Report 1999-2000, of the Commissioner of Official Languages.

Mrs. Dyane Adam made a presentation on the Annual Report (1999-2000) of the Commissioner of Official Languages and launched a National Report on services to the public in English and French : Time for a change in culture. The Commissioner then answered questions.

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
