MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 45

Monday, June 17, 2002

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:32 p.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Co-Chairs, The Hon. Shirley Maheu and Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate : The Honourables Gérald A. Beaudoin, Jean-Robert Gauthier, Viola Léger and Shirley Maheu.

From the House of Commons : Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet, Jeannot Castonguay, Yvon Godin, John Herron, Scott Reid, Benoît Sauvageau and Yolande Thibeault.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe and Marion Ménard, Analysts.

Witnesses: From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Giuliano Zaccardelli, Commissioner; Yves Bouchard, Chief Superintendent; André Bérubé, Manager Official Languages, Policy Centre.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(4)b), the Committee resumed its study on Part VII of the Official Languages Act.

Mr. Zaccardelli made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:14 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:16 p.m., the sitting resumed.  The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

Yvon Godin moved, -- That “following the refusal by CBC/Radio-Canada to appear again before the Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages, the said Committee formally orders Mr. Robert Rabinovitch, President and Chief Executive Officer or his representatives to appear on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at 3:30 p.m., in Room 237-C of the Centre Block of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa.

After debate, the question being put, it was agreed to, by a show of hands : YEAS : (8); NAYS : (0).

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
