Monday, May 6, 2002

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Co-Chair, Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present :

From the Senate : The Honourables Jean-Robert Gauthier and Viola Léger.

From the House of Commons : Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet and Yolande Thibeault.

Acting Members present: Richard Marceau for Benoît Sauvageau and Paul Forseth for Scott Reid.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.

Witnesses: From the "Fédération des communautés francophones et acadiennes du Canada": Georges Arès, President; Richard Barrette, Director General; Diane Côté, Liaison Officer.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(4)b), the Committee resumed its study on Part VII of The Official Languages Act.

Georges Arès made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:57 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:03 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera. The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

At 5:12 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
