The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:35 p.m., this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Co-Chair, Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate : The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier , The Hon. Viola Léger and The Hon. Marie-P. Poulin.

From the House of Commons : Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet and Yvon Godin.

Acting Members present: Louis Plamondon for Benoît Sauvageau, Paul Forseth for Scott Reid, Yvon Charbonneau for John Godfrey and Guy St-Julien for Raymond Lavigne.

In attendance: From the Senate : Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the House of Commons: Jean-François Pagé, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.

Appearing: From the House of Commons: Denis Coderre, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(4)b), a study on Part VII of the Official Languages Act.

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
