The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:34 p.m., this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Co-Chairs, The Hon. Shirley Maheu and Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present:

 

From the Senate: The Hon. Gérald A. Beaudoin, The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier, The Hon. Viola Léger and The Hon. Shirley Maheu.

 

From the House of Commons : Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet, Yvon Godin, John Herron, Benoît Sauvageau and Yolande Thibeault.

In attendance: From the Senate : Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the House of Commons: Jean-François Pagé, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe and Marion Ménard, Analysts.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: Sylvie Doire, Legal Counsel, « Francophonie, » Justice in Official Languages and Bijuralism; Andrée Duchesne, Legal Counsel, « Francophonie, » Justice in Official Languages and Bijuralism.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(4)b) the Committee resumed a study on section 41 of the Official Languages Act.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:19 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
