Meeting No. 19

Monday, October 22, 2001

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Co-Chairs, The Hon. Shirley Maheu and Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier and The Hon. Laurier L. LaPierre.

From the House of Commons: Gérard Binet, Yvon Godin, Scott Reid, Benoît Sauvageau and Yolande Thibeault.

In attendance: From the Senate: Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee, From the House of Commons: Jean-François Pagé, Co-Clerk of the Committee

Witnesses: From the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Jean-Claude LeBlanc, Director, Government Policy Analysis and Liaison Branch; Michel Robichaud, Director General, Investigations Branch; Ingride Roy, Legal Counsel; Claude Lussier, Parliamentary Liaison Officer. From the Library of Parliament: Robert Asselin, Research Officer. As Individual: Jean-Marc Trottier, former Air Canada senior executive.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(1a) and (2), a briefing session on Air Canada and the implementation of the Official Languages Act.

The Committee decides to meet on October 23, 2001 in order to discuss future business.

Mr. Robert Asselin, Michel Robichaud and Jean-Marc Trottier made opening statements and with Jean-Claude LeBlanc and Ingrid Roy, answered questions.

Benoit Sauvageau tabled a letter he sent to the Honorable Jean-Robert Gauthier, Senator.

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
