The Joint Clerk of the Committee (Mr. Jean-François Pagé): Members of the committee, we have a quorum. Pursuant to Standing Orders 106(1) and 106(2), the first item of business is the election of a Joint Chair.

[English]

I am ready to receive motions to that effect.

Mr. Scott Reid (Lanark—Carleton, Canadian Alliance): I would like to nominate Mauril Bélanger for the chairmanship.

An Hon. Member: Are there any further motions?

(Motion agreed to)

The Joint Clerk (Mr. Jean-François Pagé): Motion agreed to. Mr. Mauril Bélanger is hereby elected Joint Chair of the committee.

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger (Ottawa—Vanier, Lib.)): Thank you very much, Mr. Reid, for nominating me and for placing your trust in me.

The next item of business on our agenda is the election of the two vice-chairs: one from the government side and one from the opposition. I will start with the vice-chair representing the government side.

Ms. Sarmite Bulte (Parkdale—High Park, Lib.): I move that Mr. Scott Reid be elected Vice-Chair of the committee.

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): That would be the Vice-Chair for the opposition side. Alright then, we're flexible. Mr. Reid has been nominated. Is everyone in agreement on this nomination?

(Motion agreed to)

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): Congratulations, Mr. Reid.

We're now looking for a candidate for the position of Vice-Chair for the government side.

Mr. Binet nominates Ms. Yolande Thibeault.

(Motion agreed to)

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): Ms. Thibeault has accepted the nomination and so too has Mr. Reid.

Basically, we continue on as before. Congratulations to our two nominees whom I declare elected.

Congratulations.

I'll only take a minute. Those of you who have been here since work resumed in September will recall that we set up a schedule of sorts. Therefore, immediately following the one-week recess, that is on October 15, we will hold an in camera briefing on the Air Canada situation. We will review this summer's research findings so that we can then meet, as per the committee's wishes, with Air Canada union representatives, the Minister of Transport, the President of the Treasury Board and President Milton. That looks to be our agenda after we return from our week-long recess. The reports will be ready by then.

Do you have a question, Mr. Godin?

Mr. Yvon Godin (Acadie—Bathurst, NDP): Yes, I do, Mr. Chairman. You mentioned October 15. Have we agreed to hold our meetings on Monday?

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): We had agreed to try and meet Monday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday afternoons at 3:30 p.m., that is for two consecutive afternoons early in the week.

Senator Laurier L. LaPierre (Ontario, Lib.): How long do these meetings last?

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): At most, two hours.

Senator Laurier LaPierre: And we have enough work to fill four hours?

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): In truth, we could go on much longer than that, Senator LaPierre.

Senator Laurier LaPierre: And here I thought this was a bilingual country and there were no problems.

The Joint Chair (Mr. Mauril Bélanger): Welcome to our committee, Senator.

If there are no further questions, we will now adjourn and reconvene on October 15 at 3:30 p.m. Thank you.
