Meeting No. 6
TUESDAY, March 17, 1998
The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:35 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 362-E, East Block, the Co-Chairs, Sheila Finestone and Rose-Marie Losier-Cool presiding.
Members of the Committee present:
Representing the Senate: Gérald A. Beaudoin, Gérald Comeau, Rose-Marie Losier-Cool, Louis J. Robichaud.
Representing the House of Commons: Claudette Bradshaw, Cliff Breitkreuz, Denis Coderre, John Godfrey, Rahim Jaffer, Denis Paradis, Louis Plamondon, Suzanne Tremblay.
Acting Members present: Angela Vautour for Yvon Godin and Diane St-Jacques for Mark Muise.
In attendance: Tonu Onu, Joint Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe, Research Officer.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(4)(b), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of official languages policies and programs.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Olympic Association: Mr. Bill Warren, President.
Bill Warren made a statement and answered questions.
The Chair presented the Third Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure which reads as follows:
The Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages has the honour to present its Third Report to the Standing Joint Committee.
Your Sub-Committee met on Tuesday, February 17, 1998 and agreed to recommend that the following appear:
- Mr. William Warren, President of the Canadian Olympic Association – regarding the Canadian Olympic Association events in Nagano, Japan – and Mr. Victor Goldbloom, Commissioner of Official Languages, to attend.
And
Professor Charles Castonguay, University of Ottawa and Professor Jim Torczyner, Director, McGill Consortium for Human Rights Advocacy Training and McGill Consortium for Ethnicity and Strategic Social Planning – regarding an analysis of Statistics Canada’s census figures.
It was also agreed that Mme. Bertrand from the C.R.T.C. not appear on February 26, 1998 but at a later date.

Denis Coderre moved, - That the Third Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure be adopted.
The Question being put on the motion it was adopted.
At 5:09 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
