Meeting No. 23

Tuesday, March 16, 1999

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Vice-Chair, Denis Paradis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

Representing the Senate: The Hon. Gérald A. Beaudoin, The Hon. Joan Fraser and The Hon. Louis J. Robichaud.

Representing the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Eugène Bellemare, Denis Coderre, The Hon. Sheila Finestone, Dan McTeague, Denis Paradis, Louis Plamondon and The Hon. Andy Scott.

In attendance: From the Senate: Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe.

Witnesses: From the "Barreau du Québec": Jacques Fournier, "Bâtonnier"; Carole Brosseau, Lawyer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(4)(b), consideration of official languages policies and programs.

Jacques Fournier made an opening statement and, with Carole Brosseau, answered questions.

At 4:20 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Chair presented the 9th report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages which reads as follows:

The Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages has the honour to present its NINTH REPORT to the Standing Joint Committee.

Your Sub-Committee met on Thursday, March 11, 1999, and agreed to recommend the following:

That the Committee hold an information session about the background of the support of the Canadian Government regarding education, health and social services in minority language communities

That the Committee invite: 

  • Officials from Canadian Heritage

Respectfully submitted.

At 4:30m p.m., Mrs. Finestone took the Chair.

After debate, it was agreed - That the 9th Report of the Sub-Committee be concurred in.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
