Wednesday, March 3, 1999

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Co-Chair, The Hon. Sheila Finestone, presiding.

Members of the Committee present

Representing the Senate: The Hon. Joan Fraser and The Hon. Louis J. Robichaud.

Representing the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Denis Coderre, The Hon. Sheila Finestone, Inky Mark, Val Meredith, Denis Paradis, Louis Plamondon and Angela Vautour.

Other Senator present: The Hon. Jean-Maurice Simard.

In attendance: From the Senate: Tonu Onu, Co-clerk of the committee. From the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe, Researcher.

Appearing: From the Canadian Heritage: The Hon. Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Heritage: Norman Moyer, Assistant Deputy Minister; Hilaire Lemoine, Director General, Official Languages Support Programs.

Pursuant to S.O. 108(4)(b), study on the application of Part VII of the Official Languages Act.

Sheila Copps made an opening statement and with Hilaire Lemoine and Norman Moyer answered questions.

At 4:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
