MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 14

Wednesday, October 21, 1998

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, to elect the Joint Co-Chair representing the House of Commons pursuant to Standing Order 106(1) and (2).

Representing the Senate: Rose-Marie Losier-Cool

Representing the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Eugène Bellemare, Claudette Bradshaw, Sheila Finestone, Peter Goldring, Inky Mark, Ted McWhinney, Val Meredith, Mark Muise, Denis Paradis.

Acting Members present: Julian Reed for Bob Kilger; Pierre Brien for Louis Plamondon.

In attendance: Tonu Onu, Joint Clerk of the Committee (Senate). From the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe, Researcher.

The Joint Clerk (House of Commons) presided over the election of the Joint Chair (House of Commons).

John Reed moved, - That Sheila Finestone do take the Chair of this Committee as Joint-Chair.

And the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

The Joint Clerk (House of Commons) declared Sheila Finestone duly elected Joint Chair of the Committee (House of Commons).

Val Meredith moved, - That Inky Mark be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

And the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

Ted McWhinney moved, - That Denis Paradis be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

And the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

Inky Mark moved, - That the Committee authorize the Joint-Chairs, from time to time, as the need arises, to take, in conjunction with the Joint Clerks of the Committee, the appropriate measures to provide lunches for the Committee and its Sub-Committees, for working purposes, and that the cost of these lunches be charged to the budget of the Committee.

And the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

At 3:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
