SUMMARY

The purpose of this enactment is to approve, give effect to and declare valid the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement between Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada and the Dene of Colville Lake, Déline, Fort Good Hope and Fort Norman and the Metis of Fort Good Hope, Fort Norman and Norman Wells, as represented by the Sahtu Tribal Council, signed on September 6, 1993.

The Agreement will be a land claims agreement within the meaning of section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. The Agreement must be approved by Parliament in order to come into effect.

The enactment is based on the same principles as other Acts approving, giving effect to and declaring valid land claims agreements, such as the Western Arctic (Inuvialuit) Claims Settlement Act, S.C. 1984, c. 24, the Gwich'in Land Claim Settlement Act, S.C. 1992, c. 53, and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act, S.C. 1993, c. 29.
