Hans Raidel (Germany) presented his first report as Treasurer of the Assembly. Senator Jerahmiel Grafstein was Mr. Raidel predecessor from 1999 to 2007. He reported that the Secretariat continues to function within the approved budget. Mr. Raidel also noted that more money will be needed to fulfill the future work of the OSCE PA and called on parliamentarians to support such an increase.

In response to Dr. Lamers and Menzies Campbell (UK), Mr. Vējonis stressed that continued efforts on capability development were indeed needed, and duplication should be avoided as much as possible. Europeans needed to address the gap in capabilities with the United States and increase their share of NATO’s defence spending.

Members of the Board approved the 2021 audited financial statements and received information from ParlAmericas’ International Secretariat about funding and the upcoming priorities for ParlAmericas’ three thematic networks.

Members continued their consideration of the legislative situation in Venezuela as well as recent developments in Myanmar. They also received an update regarding efforts to achieve universal membership. The International Executive Committee also approved various administrative matters for recommendation to the Governing Council at its next session.

The main items discussed were the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the Canada–U.K. Trade Continuity Agreement, and relations with the United States (U.S).

Speaker Annisette-George summarized the first two sessions of ParlAmericas’ 18th Plenary Assembly, which had been held virtually in recent weeks, and reviewed the draft declaration on the topic of “rebuilding the social contract” which the participants approved at the final plenary session the following week.
