May 7-19, 2006, I represented the Government of Canada at the CPA-UK Branch Seminar in the UK and Belgium. Due to voting necessities in the House of Commons, there was no MP at this seminar. The only other Canadian was an MPP from Ontario, Mr. Bruce Crozier, Deputy Speaker of the Government of Ontario.

The second day of the workshop featured breakout rooms where groups of participants discussed their role in addressing sports trafficking. Adeline Dumoulin (CPA UK) and Lerina Bright (Mission 89) facilitated one of the breakout rooms for parliamentarians and parliamentary officials.

Presenters emphasized the gendered treatment of parliamentarians and other public figures online, noting that women face a higher degree of personal abuse and aggressive behaviour. As many presenters observed, beyond negatively impacting the lives of those who are targeted, online harassment undermines democracy and limits free speech by discouraging women and girls from being politically active.
