Participants also discussed the impact of the U.S. election on Canada and the EU’s bilateral and multilateral relations with that country, notably with respect to trade and climate change. Finally, they also discussed the forthcoming European Digital Services Act and other initiatives to fight terrorism and violent extremism online.

In their first meeting since the election of Mr. Sorbara as CAEU President, the Ambassador and Mr. Sorbara discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the impact on the European Union (EU)’s energy security.

Members heard from the candidates for the chair of the 12+ Group and proceeded to vote in a virtual secret ballot election. Ms. Arda Gerkens from the Netherlands was elected Chair of the Group for a two-year term.
